Question 1. Mental Health Services
“Definitions of ‘mental health’ and ‘mental illness’ have changed over time: an analysis of power is central to understanding these developments”. (Martin, 2017, pp. 27). Critically analyse this statement using your social work lens. Think about why definitions hold power and why critical social work practitioners are cautious regarding definitions. Discuss with specific relevance to the provision of Australian mental health services.

Question 2. Involuntary assessment and treatment
Critically analyse and discuss why involuntary assessment and/or involuntary treatment is a highly contested and controversial area of practice for social workers and other mental health clinicians. Consider power and how this impacts individuals living with mental illness, their family, carers and others in the community.

Question 3. Biomedical explanations of mental illness
The biomedical model explains mental illness is a result of brain disorder, and specifically talks to chemical imbalances. Critically analyse and discuss why this model is problematic for social work practitioners undertaking anti-oppressive practice in the mental health field. Consider alternate ways of understanding and working with people who experience human distress and emotional suffering.
PART B (40 marks)
Read the questions very carefully, and using the template provided at the end of this document, provide a response to each the questions. It is suggested you write approximately 400 words for each question. You must answer ALL questions in PART B (ie. Questions 3, 4, 5 and 6). Aside from consulting the DSM-5, you do not need to provide references when answering these questions. This is the practical component of the exam.
Question 3 Diagnosis (10 marks)
Informed by the MSE and other information in the above scenario; identify a DSM-5 diagnosis that you think “best” aligns with Chantelle’s presentation. In responding, clearly answer why the diagnosis best fits and why the other diagnoses were excluded. Pay attention to the list of symptoms and any other relevant guidance provided in the DSM-5 (ie. provide a rationale for your diagnosis). You can search for the DSM-5 through the library (put DSM-5 APA into the library search terms OR use:
1. Schizophrenia
2. Schizoaffective Disorder
3. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
4. Major Depression with Mood Congruent Psychotic Features
5. Generalised Anxiety Disorder
Question 4. Critical Analysis of the Mental State Examination (10 marks)
Critically discuss Chantelle’s MSE, reflecting on what information is contained in the MSE. Are there strengths in the MSE? Are there limitations? Are there gaps? Would a social worker be concerned about acting upon the information contained in Chantelle’s MSE? Make a recommendation to your team around the need for further information about Chantelle. Clearly describe exactly what you would say when making this recommendation to your team, including your rationale for further information. Please note there are 5 marks for the critique of Chantelle’s MSE and 5 marks for the recommendation to the colleagues in your mental health team around the need for further information about Chantelle.
Question 5. Comprehensive mental health assessment (10 marks)
Describe and explain what is involved in mental health assessment, including steps and process. Discuss why comprehensive mental health assessment is so important. Complete your critical discussion with identification of 5 further questions and who you would like to ask, to better understand Chantelle and her mental health issues. Make sure the questions are written using the exact words you would use when asking the nominated person. Ask 5 questions that go beyond the MSE in order to better understand Chantelle and her current issues and experiences that have led to admission to the mental health unit. Please note there are 5 marks for the critical discussion and 1 mark per question you pose.
