Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face unique challenges in trying to maintain food and nutrition security for their communities. These challenges may include limited land resources, narrow indigenous food options, the high cost of food imports and global isolation. However, potentially rich marine resources and increasing tourism activities may provide opportunities if these resources can be protected. The FAO has been actively involved in supporting SIDS in addressing the sustainable development issues related to food security and agriculture and has contributed to the preparatory process for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The outcome documents of this preparatory process consistently acknowledged food security and nutrition as a priority area in order to achieve sustainable development.
