AIMS

The purpose of this project is to enable students to practice design skills and apply AS 1684 to a practical application in designing a verandah using knowledge gained during the course. Students will focus on a live site (your house or one that you are familiar with) so that the knowledge developed is highly applicable to the real world.

Course Objectives

It is beneficial to familiarise yourself with the relationship between the assessment and the course objectives. By the end of this course students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the design and construction of residential buildings in accordance with the National Construction Code and related Australian Standards.

  2. Devise options for the design and construction of residential buildings according to the principles of Performance Design & Engineering.

Assessment description

Using AS 1684.2 you will design a verandah for the house you live in, or one that you are familiar with and have access to.

Your task is to design each of the timber members for the verandah, applying skills in interpretation and application of AS 1684.2 including the supplements.

Part A: Verandah site selection

1. Identify a location for a verandah on a specific site. The verandah will consist of a roof and posts. Detail the location using a site plan; you should where possible include photos of the proposed site. Write 200 words describing the site and referring to images as you do so. What might be some of the opportunities or challenges of this site? What will you need to take into consideration including the scope, limitations, and layout of the site? Identify what these are and how you will account for them in your future design.

Part B: Verandah Design

Design a verandah for your selected site, and detail its construction in plans, elevations and sections. Provide one site plan, one structural plan and two elevations, and sections to detail connections. Provide a specification of the selection of timber for exposure to the elements and protection and finish to your timber, and any other information not covered in your plans. The maximum word count for this submission is words. Use the appropriate supplement from AS 1684.2 to design the members and ensure the design also complies with the Standard itself. Your plans elevations and sections must describe:

  1. All dimensions including length, height, roof pitch and span.

  2. All structural members to be shown on structural plan and elevations, with size, span, seasoned state and stress grade. Members must include purlins, rafters, beams, and posts and may include ridge, collar tie and/or bracing.

  3. Connection detail for post to ground including footing pad dimensions, as provided for you, to be shown in section drawings.

  4. Connection detail for beam to existing house wall or eave, if needed, as provided for you, to be shown in section drawings.

  5. Specify roof cladding as nominated in Part 3 of this document.

  6. Specify protection and finish to timber required by AS1684 for outdoor exposure.

2. The following parameters for design are optional:

  • Decide whether your verandah is flat or gable roof. Do not include hip ends or dutch gables. It may be attached to wall or eaves or freestanding. The size of the verandah is up to you, you may determine this from your site conditions, but it must comply with the limitations of AS 1684.
  • The purlin, rafter and beam spacing is up to you. The purlin spacing is dependent on the roof cladding (see fixed parameters in Part 3 of this document)
  • Your beams and rafters may have an overhang if you wish; it must comply with the supplement.

3. The following parameters for design are fixed:

  • Your design must comply with AS 1684.2. Use Tables within the appropriate Supplement to the Standard. You may use Table 52 for verandah posts and the appropriate Table for verandah beams for the beams.
  • Your verandah will be clad with Lysaght Colorbond coated Trimdek. Trimdek 0.48 (base metal thickness 0.48mm) must be installed with a minimum 2˚ pitch. It is capable of a 1600 single span with 1850 end span. Its mass is 4.93kg/m .
  • MGP10 Pinus will be the timber used.
  • A pad footing to each post of dimensions 450x450x750 deep, with a post shoe of tornado type, fixed to post with 2xM10 bolts.
  • If attaching your verandah to a wall, you will use a wall plate of same depth as your rafters, and 45mm thickness, fixed at 600mm centres to the wall. If the wall is masonry, use ‘dynabolts’ and if a timber framed wall, use timber bolts.
  • If your verandah is freestanding, you will need to provide lateral bracing in the form of knee braces. Use 70 x 35 MGP10 900 long fixed to post and rafter at a 45˚ angle.
  • For eave-attached verandahs you may use one of the attachment details provided.

4. Include a specification to detail your protection to timber and any information that is required but not stated on the plans.

5. Your plans and elevations must be clear and dimensioned. Use sections to detail connections for construction.

6. The design does not need to cover specific fastenings, tie downs, or wind bracing.

7. Include a page to detail your design process (working out) and any information that is required but not stated on the plans.
