Assignment Task

Purpose

The purpose of this assessment is to practice designing a research project and to describe the design in a textual form. Being able to communicate effectively about research is just as important as designing and conducting the research itself, and this assessment will cover all of these aspects. This assessment is also potentially a stepping stone towards Assessment 3 (Research Paper), where you can (optional, but encouraged) use the design from this Assessment for your Research Paper.

Task

Your task is to prepare a written description of a research methodology to answer a valid research question from survey data. You should describe the methodology in enough detail so that someone else from a similar background would be able to carry out the research based on the description. Therefore, the description should not be vague or ambiguous. Your research question should be based on public survey data that is openly available. You will still need to obtain these data, work out what is relevant to your research question, and consider the ethics of how you would acquire such data through a survey. Some online resources are listed below, but you are not restricted to using these sources. However, you must be mindful of legal and ethical considerations that may be implied by use of any particular dataset or data repository, and be able to describe the method of collection. Although these websites provide much summary data and even answer some research questions themselves, you are encouraged to design your own research questions which can be answered with these data.

In the description, you need to answer the following questions:

• What is your research question?
• Why is this an important question to answer?
• What does previous research tell you about the question?
• What data will you need to answer your question?
• How will you analyze this data?
• What are the professional ethical implications of:

(i) creating and implementing a survey to collect the proposed data collection;

(ii) analysis of that data?
