To perform a structural analysis using established methods to predict the load capacity of reinforced structural concrete elements as close as possible to the collapse load.

Background

You are an engineer working on a site where you need to transport material. You decide to utilise the clear pathway that an existing channel provides. This requires beams to span across the channel to support the rails of a bogie that holds the material. You have three beams to choose from and you need to determine how much load they can support.

The three beams are shown on the attached drawing. Your task is to determine the load carrying capacity of each beam (represented as the point load, P, at each rail location) and their failure mode.

Each beam will be load tested to check your results. The load test arrangement will mimic the load arrangement on site as shown on the attached drawing.

You realise that to calculate the load capacity, safety factors are not appropriate, and real material properties should be used.

You may research and investigate real material properties of materials. As a guide, real material properties can be in the order of:

Concrete: Design compressive strength of 40 MPa at 28 days – Note that these panels will actually be tested at 23 days with an expected actual strength that may vary from 44MPa to 52MPa. For this Lab, assume the concrete is 50 MPa at the time of testing of the beams.

Reinforcing steel: Design tensile strength of 500 MPa – Actual strength varies from 550 MPa to 580 MPa. For this Lab, assume the steel tensile strength is 560 MPa at the time of testing of the beams.

The beam dimensions and reinforcement for each beam is shown in the attached drawings.
