Assignment Task

In this assignment, the theory and practices of identifying and assessing learning barriers in children are demonstrated.In preparation for this assignment, the assignments to follow, and the other modules, you will need to:

• Identify a school child with a learning problem with whom you can work.
• Ask the school to write a letter on their letterhead saying that they permit for you to complete your scholastic assessment practical assignments at the school.
• You must identify a primary school child in the intermediate phase (Grades 4-6) to work with.
• Diagnostically (screening) assess the child to determine the child's learning problems.

Part A

Debate: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these types of assessments: traditional, authentic, normative, and criterion-referenced Scholastic Assessments. Read the notes in UNIT 1 and/or other resources to supplement and deepen your understanding of these types of assessments. Remember to apply APA 7 academic writing and referencing requirements.

Part B

Process of Screening: Discuss the process of screening learners with barriers to learning as expected by the educational authorities. Refer to the Department of Education, SIAS (2014) operational policy.

• Explain how this process happens in your local school.
• How are learning difficulties recognised, diagnosed (screened), and recorded in schools?
• Explain the role of the School-Based Support Team 

Part C: Ethics

To start the process of assessing a child, you are required to first obtain informed consent from the parent(s)/guardian(s)/caregiver(s). Schedule an interview with the parent(s)/guardian(s)/caregiver(s) where you explain the process of the diagnostic (screening) assessment and obtain their written consent. Attach this informed consent letter with careful consideration of confidentiality and anonymity to this assignment.

Discuss the ethical considerations that should be taken into account before, during, and after assessing this child. Refer to theory in this regard

Part D

Conducting the Interview: Make the preparatory arrangements for conducting a diagnostic (screening) scholastic assessment with the learner. You will need to interview the parent(s)/guardian(s)/caregiver(s). Fill in the biographical information about the learner and relevant family and background information on the attached form which is the first part of the Support Needs Assessment.Complete the Support Needs Assessment Form (Assignment 1: Part 1) and upload it onto Blackboard.
