STRUCTURE OF FUMARASE

Structure: It is an alpha protein belonging to the L-aspartase/fumarase family. It resembles a tetramer of identical subunits. The enzyme has two
dicarboxylate binding sites namely the A site and the B site (Weaver et al., 2019).

MECHANISM OF ACTION OF FUMARASE ENZYME

Fumarase hydration takes place in the seventh step of the TCA cycle

It converts fumarate to L-malate in the mitochondria

Cytosolic fumarase plays a role in the DNA damage response and double strand breaks

It is involved in the eukaryotic and prokaryotic DNA damage (Leshets, 2018).
