Purpose

The purpose of this assessment is to determine students’ knowledge on assessing a person’s readiness for change based on the Stages of Change Model, delivering appropriate brief interventions, critically evaluating pharmacotherapies used in the treatment of substance use disorders and consideration of multi-factorial determinants of substance misuse, using a case study.

Description

Students are required to consider an individual on their Alcohol and Other Drug use (AOD) treatment trajectory.

Case study: Watch ‘Addicted Australia’ episode one on SBS, based on six-month treatment program for individuals living with a substance use disorder. Choose either Ruben or Sarah to focus your case study on.

You are required to consider the person holistically and consider the multi-factorial determinants of health, their readiness for change, recommend appropriate brief interventions and critically evaluate any relevant pharmacotherapies used in the treatment of their substance use disorder.

Introduction

Provide a logical overview of the main points of the essay. Comorbid AOD and mental health conditions (approx. 400 words): Introduce the person and provide a brief overview of the relevant substance use disorder the person is living with. Identify and describe any comorbid mental health conditions that may have placed the person on the trajectory of addiction. Highlight the prevalence of comorbid AOD use and mental health conditions in Australia supported by integrating statistics.

Readiness for change and brief interventions

Identify the stage of change that best represents the person in their process of change and describe a brief intervention that may support the person during the process of change. Reference must be made to the Stages of Change model.

Pharmacotherapy

Critically evaluate one (1) evidence-based pharmacotherapy used in the treatment of the person’s AOD use disorder.
