• Drawing on Unit 4, create a map or outline of the essay you are reviewing. You can map ideas using your word processor or take a photo of a drawing. If there is quoted material on your map or outline, enclose it in quotation marks and include a citation.
• Using your map or outline, write a paragraph (about 200 words) that summarizes the essay and explains the topic, purpose, and main idea of the essay. Include citations for all paraphrased or quoted material.
• Identify the primary rhetorical mode the writer uses in the essay. Drawing on the appropriate course outline logs, write a paragraph (about 200 words) where you explain why this mode is dominant, using examples to support your position. Is this mode appropriate? Why or why not?
• Find examples in the essay of two other rhetorical modes used in addition to the primary one. For each, identify which mode it demonstrates, and quote the relevant example. Give an example of each mode, and explain how it develops and supports the author’s purpose.
• Choose an idea within the essay that can act as a prompt. Using one of the five strategies for generating ideas (Reader’s Choice 29–33), create some prewriting on the idea you chose. Whatever format, keep to less than 200 words. You can submit a photo of your work if it is not done on a word processor.
