Ethical Dilemma
I grew up in a small town in central Oregon, from kindergarten to graduation, I was blessed to be raised in a primarily faith-based, safe, and close-knit community where everyone looked out for everyone else. When I was younger, specifically in high school I often sought out validation from the wrong types of people, I struggled with boundaries and holding other people accountable for their actions. I held my standards close, they were very different from most everyone’s, but never expected or required anything of those around me. At the time I didn't understand any of this, I simply knew what I felt.I participated in a variety of programs and activities within my community and school. I remember it was early spring which meant track season. I can clearly visualize being downtown at a local grocer on our lunch hour, I was with one of my closest friends I trusted very much. Her family was well known in our small town, but she was the black sheep of the family. She often was getting in trouble and falling in with the wrong crowds. She was a very nonchalant girl with some self-destructive habits, our friendship didn't last long but she always seemed unphased, nonetheless . We were together shopping for something simple like snacks and drinks for our district meet that evening. She made the comment she was going to steal from this small business. At this time I was aware that from her choices her parents cut her off, so she didn’t have much money, all I knew at that moment was that this was wrong. I knew I wasn't going to participate, but that wasn't enough

Acting ethically, I would tell start with talking with her. Explaining the dishonesty, and lack of character she was demonstrating. Integrity is delicate, acting on strong moral principles all of the time is what makes an ethical person, not making one good decision. This choice she was making not only affected her but was illegal and blatantly wrong. Shoplifting fines can range up to $1000 for minors and she or even her parents could potentially receive charges. She was my friend, but I felt this obligation and responsibility to prevent or even report her actions. This was a small local business that could easily be taken advantage of. Acting on what deontology teaches of having a duty to what is right even when its hard, I would need to report to the store owner what was happening with my friend shoplifting. What she was doing was wrong and against the law, and against my beliefs as a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I committed to standing for truth and righteousness and acting on virtue based ethical choices that was what needed to be done.

Given this unethical situation we can evaluate the decision by applying it to a universal decision. If given this situation and everyone in the world were to one either prevent this friend from stealing or immediately report it to the store owner, the shoplifting incident would be resolved, however, depending on how dire the situation. My friend had a financial situation making it difficult for her to purchase these items but overall, simply was making the choice to steal something she did not need. Others in a similar situation may need to steal to provide for their family or survive. Universally if the situation is the same, from an ethical standpoint the principle applies that this shoplifting incident with my friend was wrong and needs to be stopped and reported.
