The way that we normally read books in the West is linear, in that we read from left to right and from the front of the book, to the back. However, in other writing systems such as Chinese and Hebrew, the text is read from the back of the book forward, and in Chinese, from top to bottom. Nonetheless, this is still considered a linear narrative. Think about how dominant linear narratives are in our lives. They are so dominant that we don't even think about them. This is because this kind of narrative mirrors how we think time works, moving forward, simply. Linearity can be defined as when a narrative runs in a straight line, without being broken up or reorganized in any way. It reads from beginning to end, without interruption, and can be simple or complex. Questions: 1) Consider whether the ‘point and click’ interactivity destroy the story? What do you think and why? How many more examples of non-linear narratives can you find? 2) Frame. Consider what you wish to convey (repetition of events, or something which happens unexpectedly). The first part of the process will require you to think about how the story is sequenced, and whether it is linear or non-linear. 3) Research the work of other illustrators, animators, and filmmakers whose work you find interesting to help you create your work. Pay particular attention to how they produce their work, and what processes they go through to achieve the final result in the medium they have chosen.
