The absorbance output is an average of the absorbances at each of the wavelengths emerging from the light source and this is mainly a problem when examining substances with a narrow natural band width. The natural band width is a characteristic of the substance itself and is related to how sharp the peaks are in its spectral profile. Instruments that cannot accommodate for narrow natural band widths will underestimate the absorbance readings leading to erroneous outcomes.
