Project Information

Read the project scenarios below and answer all the questions that follow. Your project management company, Siyaya Projects, is a diverse company that specialises in a variety of project management disciplines.

You have some clients who wish to make use of your project management services, however, you only have the time and resources available to do one of the projects.

Project 1

Mandela 90th Birthday Celebrations For 1,000 Underprivilege Children in the Eastern Cape:

1. Hire and decorate open air venue.

2. Hire staff. 3. Hire baker to make very large cake for 1,000 children.

4. Make up party packs and gift hampers for 1,000 children.

5. Hire items for children’s activities:

• Budget: R3.5 million;
• Project will take six months and shall be held ON Mandela’s birthday;
• Return on investment is 10%; and
• You shall have four people / resources who shall assist you complete this project.

Project 2

Revamp a community park in Soweto by installing a free outdoor gym:

1. Secure and Clean Park.

2. Decide on what gym equipment.

3. Hire company to make gym equipment.

4. Hire staff to install gym equipment.

5. Test gym equipment to ensure safe and cannot be stolen:

• Budget: R3.5 million;
• Project will take six months and be ready for the start of the spring season;
• Return on investment is 10%; and
• You shall have four people / resources who shall assist you complete this project.

Project 3

If you choose this you would need to provide details of the project in an introduction before you start answering the questions in Assignment

1. However, you are required to adhere to the following restrictions and information of your project:

• R3.5 million;
• Your project shall only take six months to complete;
• Return on investment 10%; and
• You shall have four people / resources who shall assist you complete this project.

Question 1

1. Statement: Projects are not ongoing operational work, doing the same thing day after day. Before any project is selected, a feasibility study needs to be conducted as a company only have sufficient resources and time to complete one project at a time and the project manager should establish which project is more feasible.

a. Choose your project by stating which project you will be completing for your customer and why this project was chosen (2).

b. Justify the above answer discussing with any four (4) areas of feasibility that were analysed to make the decision - ensure you make reference to the chosen project. (Theory will be awarded no marks).

2. From the project chosen above, discuss at least five of your chosen projects attributes to justify the above statement (2 x 5).

3. You are the project manager of your chosen project but shall need to hire a project administrator to assist with the detail as you will be required to manage the project and ensure all parties are completing the required work on time and within budget.

a. Briefly define what is the difference in the role of the project manager verses the project administrator.

b. Considering your project, what are the four main tasks you would allocate to the project administrator that you are going to hire in order to successfully complete your chosen project. (Application to your project is required).

4. Construct a stakeholder register for at least three internal and three external stakeholders that would be involved in your chosen project.

The PMBOK – 5th edition states that “Manage Project Team is the process of tracking team member performance, providing feedback, resolving issues and managing team changes to optimize project performance”.

There are five methods (ways) to deal with conflict yet not all these ways resolve conflict.

Using original examples (not those examples provided in your student manual) discuss the five methods (ways) projects manager use to deal with conflict.

Question 2

1. To understand how a team develops, Tuckman and Jensen (1977: 276) developed the Tuckman ladder model of team development. This model sees teams going through five phases.

Make use of practical examples and fully discuss each of these five phases according to Tuckman and Jensen (1977: 276) that a typical project team would go through to complete a project successfully.

2. The definition of Project Management is the application of skills, tools, techniques, and management processes required to undertake a project successfully (Project Management Institute, 2017).

All projects are managed through a series of knowledge areas which ensures each area of the project is managed sufficiently.
