Your task is to study the response of the system under various conditions given below and write a report describing your observations and conclusions. Please provide the necessary figures and also the block diagram of the system which you used in Simulink to produce the results.
(1) Compare the time response of the system for the following situations
a. Step increase of 100C in the feed temperature with heat input held constant.
b. Step increase of 42 kW in the heat input with feed temperature held constant.
c. A simultaneous step increase in the feed temperature (100C) and heat input (42 kW).
(2) Compare the time response of the temperature measured by the thermocouple with the time response of the outlet temperature when the inlet temperature undergoes a step increase of 100C. The thermocouple is known to have a first order response with a time constant of 30 s.
(3) Construct a P&ID for this process which includes a closed feedback control system. The controller and indicators are part of a distributed control system (DCS) and are accessible in the control room.
(4) For the case where only proportional control is used, compare the response with and without the controller if the proportional gain is 20 and the inlet temperature undergoes a step change of 100C.
(5) Compare the open-loop response with the closed-loop response using a PI controller with the same proportional gain and integral times of 30, 60 and 90 s.
