Assignment Task:

Scenarios:

You must choose from one of the following scenarios and prepare your individual proposal to show how you will plan and complete the proposed project.   After a submission and vetting process, teams will be formed and the final stage of this project will be completed in a team as a formal report.   You and your team will need to think carefully about the audience and purpose of each report, the most useful structure (indirect/direct), the relevant evidence to include, and the format that most usefully highlights information and creates a persuasive argument if necessary.

While the report must be formatted according to the conventions outlined in your textbook (see pp. 221 - 231), you have a lot of flexibility with this assignment to add details that provide context, precision, and interest for each scenario.

Please choose from one of the following scenarios:

1. For an organization of your choice, propose a change that you think is needed and would improve it in one of the following ways: productivity and profits, quality of life for employees or clients, and/or social justice for marginalized groups.  (For example, you might suggest buying more equipment for your department, hiring an additional worker or expanding a department, making your organization more family-friendly, making the organization more efficient, partnering with local Indigenous groups, or improving accessibility for customers or employees with disabilities).   (This scenario is similar to option 2 in your text, pg. 192:  Write a Recommendation Report).

2. You have a job with the Placement Office on campus.   Your job is to evaluate potential employers and assess whether or not you should recommend students to work at this company. Consider aspects like the following: what type of training is available to new employees? How much travel and weekend work is expected?   How soon is the average entry-level person promoted?  Is there a busy season?  Is the company financially stable? How likely is it to be affected by current economic, demographic, and political trends? Your boss would like to see a report before you make your first recommendation.

3. You are a marketer for a company that is planning on expanding into China, Russia, or India. However, there is some concern that the political, cultural, and economic climate is not favorable for the introduction of your good / service to the market at this time.   Your boss would like you to research and report on all the factors that may affect your company's ability to succeed in the foreign market.   However, first s/he would like to see a proposal that outlines your approach.

4. You are on the board of a long-standing, local, non-profit agency that supports children in the community who are grieving and need support.  Unfortunately, the organization has had key board members leave over the last few years, and the board is now relatively young, inexperienced and faced with the task of fundraising.   If they don't raise some funds, the organization will have to disband, even though its services are in demand.  They have contacted you because they need a professional fundraiser to help them sort out the details, but before they commit the last of their meagre funds, they have asked you to submit a formal proposal outlining how you will help them go about raising funds.
5. Your municipality has received federal funding to address an issue of climate change and sustainability in your community. City Council has asked your firm to propose several projects and recommend one that will revitalize a brownfield, improve public transit, prepare for extreme weather, or improve waste management.    Submit a report to City Council that briefly details and compares three potential projects, while also making a final recommendation.   Given that the council would like to be heralded as socially conscious and fiscally responsible, it is seeking an innovative project that not only benefits the environment but the economy and the community as well.

6. You are an employee of an engineering firm in BC that is beginning to distinguish itself in the field of aquaponics.  Your boss has asked you to research other international firms whose projects are innovative and merit your attention, and who may have an interest in ongoing collaboration.  S/he acknowledges that the Nordic countries are innovative, but she’s curious if you can find a firm that is closer to home with whom to collaborate.   Write a report that compares several firms and their current projects, as well as providing a rationale for pursuing (or not pursuing) collaboration with them.    She is seeking a recommendation report before you travel and invest further time/resources.

7. You are a member of a foundation that promotes engineering and geoscience by granting bursaries and scholarships to individuals who are not typically represented in STEM fields.   Since the foundation is always looking for new donors, it has created a committee to deal with this ongoing need and you are on this committee.    Investigate possible ways to increase donors and raise awareness of the foundation and its aims.  Write a recommendation report that compares several options and the details of their implementation.

8. You have been asked to prepare a report for your (real or fictitious) employer’s Human Resources about dealing with workers from_____ [you may choose the country or culture]. What do your employer and fellow employees need to know about workers from this country? What factors do and do not motivate people in this group? How do they show respect? What earns person respect in their culture—money, age, education, experience, people skills, technical expertise, or what else? Are they used to more hierarchical or more egalitarian settings? What is their perception of time? Do they place more emphasis on individual or collective achievements? What is their attitude to the competition? And what conflicts or misunderstandings may arise between workers from this culture and the rest of the employees? Or are the cultural differences negligible compared to individual variation? [You may invent a company but must do factual research on the country or culture they choose.]

9. You’ve been asked to prepare a report for a hotel or an outdoors-activities company in the mid-Island region that wishes to market its services to tourists from X [a non-English speaking country]. What country would you recommend and why? What specifically does the hotel or company have to offer to tourists from X, and what does it need to put into place? What other considerations need to go into marketing the hotel or company abroad? What hiring or training needs for staff should the owner think about? What does the staff need to learn about intercultural communication and the culture of X? What language issues may arise, and what needs to be done about them? [you may invent a hotel or company but must do actual research on potential tourism from a particular non-English speaking country.]

10. The director of the local foodbank of your mid-sized city has been given a large gift from an unknown donor who has specified that the donation is to be used to redesign the interior of the central depot.   The letter specifies that the depot needs a friendlier, more modern, accessible “feel” and that people getting handouts needs to feel respected as “customers, not clients”.    The director wants to honour the requests of the donor, but also hopes some practical needs can be addressed (ie. new refrigerators).   S/he has asked you to outline some possible renovations that could give the depot a new look, while also resourcing its more practical needs.  [you may set the budget for this, but some factual research must be done on the price of materials and labour]

11. A large property developer in your city is building a new independent living facility for aging residents.  They are heralding their facility as one that will be a “warm and welcoming intergenerational space where families can visit together and people who are differently-abled can participate in various activities.”  Write a recommendation report that details the use of materials, colours, and other design elements that could be incorporated to create the desired atmosphere.   The report is a proposal/recommendation report to the chief architect that details your recommendations, outlines projected costs, and provides examples of interiors in other similar facilities.

12. You have been given a contract with a design+ build firm that oversees modest house builds from start to finish.  The new firm wants to market themselves specifically to first-time home buyers and they’ve give you the task of creating three different concepts for clients to choose from.  These might be distinguished based on price or on style; the firm wants to offer their clients an experience that is somewhat individualized and has a “DIY feel” but that is also easy to source and replicate.  Is that possible?  Maybe.  It’s a bit confusing for you, but you’re ready to give it a try.  Write a report that recommends that outlines three different concepts and includes price point(s) and a rationale for each.

13. You are a designer with a large Interior Design Co. [you may choose a different business sector]  in the mid-West that has decided to redesign their website.   Your boss has asked you to investigate the websites of other, similarly-sized firms and consider their effectiveness.   Write a report that analyzes three different companies’ websites and makes recommendations about how your findings could be implemented by your company.   Make sure that the report outlines set criteria by which to analyze the different websites (ie. user-friendliness, visual appeal, relevant information, useful links etc) and consider constructing a hypothetical survey that users could take to provide evidence for your assessment of each website.
