The Nurse Manager welcomed her enthusiasm, however, Jessica felt that she had not been able to make any changes in her first month as a Graduate RN. Things like buzzers not being answered, patients’ privacy not protected during showers, medication left on tables and patients ‘ordered around’ by staff were of most concern to her.

Option 2:

Ben is working in an Emergency Department (ED) in a large metropolitan hospital as a Graduate RN. He previously undertook a 3-week placement as a student in another smaller suburban ED, which he found to be stimulating and fulfilling. This ED, however, is much busier and noisier. It takes the most seriously ill patients, and at times staff appears to be irritable and unapproachable when trying to keep up with the patient's needs. Ben feels that with a large number of unfamiliar staff he has little consistent support and is worried that he cannot give quality care, master the digital technology and that he will be forced to work outside of his scope of practice.
