The Juukan Caves ‘disaster’ – a word that occurs frequently in media coverage of the caves incident – was also a reputational disaster for Rio Tinto. A Google News search reveals more than eighty articles about the destruction of 46,000 year-old cultural heritage artefacts in Western Australia in 2020. Newspapers, with leanings across the political spectrum, variously called it “wilful destruction”, “egregious destruction”, and comment that “to their shame, company executives knew very well that what they did was wrong”. The ABC reported that Rio Tinto had known for six years that one of the Juukan Caves was of "the highest archaeological significance in
Australia". Despite this, Rio Tinto proceeded with the project to establish a new mine on the site.
