In the interest of technical cooperation, the Belgian government is launching a project for the development of artisanal fishing and aquaculture in Katanga Province, in partnership with the Minister for Agriculture, Fishing and Livestock. Financial support was set at 5 million euros ($8,215,432), starting in 2011.

The project was aimed at contributing to food security and reducing poverty in the area by rehabilitating the fishing and fish farming sectors. During the start-up phase (expected to be 2 years), the project will focus on three key organisational components that are geographically distinct, aiming to extend out progressively to the whole of Katanga Province over the following three years (after an evaluation to be carried out midway through the start-up phase).

The three key components of the project are the following:

•  Support for the sustainable commercialisation and development of the fisheries resources from the vast lake and river complex located in the Kamalondo Basin, all from a sustainable development perspective and to the benefit of the local population.
• Support for organising fishermen associations at the Nzilo and Tshangalele lakes so that environmental impact studies into the mining industry's effects on fishery resources can be carried out, as well as sustainability studies for the purposes of making responsible fishing practices more prevalent.
