Project Resource Planning – Project Management
Assignment 1
Introduction
This assignment is intended to be formative more than summative, albeit elements of each will be part of the assessment (i.e. you need to present material that is accurate and makes sense, but the main purpose is to learn while you are doing the assignment).
It has been designed to have you review, and perhaps even research elements of subject content covered to date, and in particular, the more technical elements, specifically Agile Project Management and Resource Levelling.
Assignment questions
Part 1 – to be or not to be….AGILE
You are successful project management consultants, and I am your new client. I’ve completed several projects using PM consultants (over a decade or so) but always using traditional PM methods and approaches.
NOW…as my new PM consultant organisation…
Please write me a report of between 750 and 1000 words that will give me a clear understanding of the main similarities and differences between traditional and Agile project management approaches and techniques for the types of project I do, which are usually related to internet marketing, IT generally and corporate video production.
I’ve also heard of some combination of different styles of project management called the hybrid approach, so be sure to include a description of what that is and where I might be able to use it on my projects.
Keep in mind I really want to have a clear understanding so I can make sensible decisions about what approach to use on various future projects, without further investigation. Feel free to include as many or as few relevant diagrams as you think you should to ensure I understand your report, but I definitely do not want to have to read more (or less) words than defined above.
Part 2 – Mission Possible!
During week 5 lecture, we worked through the various steps of completing a network diagram, determining early and late start and finish times for each activity, calculating total float and free float and preparing an early start resource histogram. In class, we continued to commence work on a late start resource histogram. (Refer attached file named Resource levelling for PRP).
Your mission (and unlike Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible movies) you don’t get any option but to choose to accept it!) is to:
Complete the late finish bar chart. You may draw that over the lines indicating total float (red dotted lines) on the early finish bar chart provided in the week 9 notes – i.e. the notes we used in class in week 5…I am looking for correctness of approach for this part of the assignment.
Complete the resource histogram for the late finish scenario. You may do this by hand drawing over the early finish resource histogram that is already done in the week 9 notes that we worked on during the week 5 lecture.
Complete a resource levelling attempt. Don’t bother splitting activities, but rather simply move some activities around within float time available to get a more even distribution of total resources over the project duration. For this exercise you will need to both indicate where the activity will occur on a bar chart, and to draw the resource histogram for the revised bar chart. NOTE that you may do this with hand drawing in a different and distinct colour either on the same chart you used to complete step 1, or on a separate copy of the early start bar chart with the float dotted in (i.e. one of the diagrams from the week 9 notes)
Part - 3
Provide a 350–500 word explanation of the benefits and challenges of using resource levelling, providing examples where appropriate.
