Overview:

You are hired as a consultant for a project to construct an offshore resort. The resort will be built on an artificial fill (Yt = 20kN/m3) of high permeability, which will cover a much larger area compared to the plan area of the resort. Since the resort is being constructed offshore, the ground surface of the resort must always be located 1 m above the local water JeveJ.
 

Given: The geologic profile is given in the figure below. Use 'Yw = 10kN/m and consider hydrostatic condition. You can make reasonable assumption to proceed with the design if needed. In case you made such assumption, please indicate it clearly in the report.

To determine: Your job is to determine:
(i) Overall mass geometry of the resort (i.e., plan and elevation including Height of resort, Hresort)

Goal: The goal is to make the center of resort ( at the ground level) to be Im above the water level at the end of primary (EOP) consolidation.
 

Constraints: The following constraints are applied:
(i) Each story is 3 meters high. The vertical surcharge by each story is 100 kPa, e.g., stress applied by a 3-story height of the building is 300 kPa.
(ii) The plan area at the ground level you designed should be between 500 m2 and 1000 m2.
(iii) Use Boussinesq solution to compute the stress increase by building the resort. You can use the charts provided in the lecture slides and/or the theoretical equation, i.e., you can use the Boussinesq solution for the vertical point load and then analytically or numerically integrate over the designed plan area to estimate the stress increase.
 

Deliverables: Provide a consultant report that includes but not limited to:
(1) Description of the final design including:

  • Plan view of each story of your resort
  • Elevation view including the number of building stories and Hresort
  • 3D view of the building (Google SketchUp is suggested for drawing)
  • Height of the fill, Htin

(2) Discussion of aesthetic aspects and uniqueness of your building design
(3) Provision of complete calculations and full analysis of the following (at the ground level).
Make sure to report o'vo, o'p, o'v1at EOP (all in kPa):

  • EOP Settlement at the center of resort which should be close to 1 m above water
  • EOP Settlement at the four farthest locations of resort
  • Time to take for the resort to settle 0.1 meters at the center after EOP settlement

( 4) Additional recommendations including:

  • Method to reduce the EOP settlement and estimation of reduced time
  • Suggestions in case the owner expands the resort in the future

 

Suggested design procedure:
(1) Figure out a'vo and a'p•
(2) Figure out which settlement equation needs to be used with the given information.
(3) Design your fill and building, and estimate a' vf to make the building 1 m above the water ( or the other way around, i.e,. a 'vt first, and design later. It's up to you.)
(4) You need some number of iterations for (3).
