Assignment Task:

This assessment task is divided into two parts:

PART 1: PRACTICAL INVESTIGATION

You are to conduct a teacher-set practical experiment to investigate the properties of substances. You will be assessed on how you answer the discussion questions provided (these will be submitted with your report).

PART 2: REPORT

This report consists of five sections:

Sections I and II: Substance reports 1 and 2

For this research task you are given four groups of substances:

Group A – potassium carbonate, calcium hydroxide
Group B – carbon nanotubes, sulfur
Group C – brass, pewter
Group D – mercury, tin

You need to select 2 substances only, but they must come from different groups (for example, you may select calcium hydroxide and mercury, but you cannot select brass and pewter)
For both of the two substances you have chosen, you will need to hand in the following information:

A table which identifies information about their physical properties, including melting point, boiling point, type of bonding and at least two other properties (250 words maximum)
A statement describing the form in which the substance is naturally found and extracted, or how it is produced (250 words maximum for each substance)
A statement explaining how the physical properties are a result of the structure/bonding (half a page maximum for each substance), plus an appropriate diagram for each substance.
A statement describing two uses of each substance, linking how its physical properties contribute to its uses (250 words maximum for each substance)

Section III: Research question

You will develop your own research question about one of your substances, which discusses a development that has happened related to the substance and why this development has happened. For example, has an alternative substance been developed for some reason? Is the substance being considered for an alternate use? You will evaluate the effectiveness of this development (500 words maximum)

Section IV: References

You are expected to reference all sources according to the Harvard format and hand this in on a separate sheet of paper. You must have a minimum of 4 separate references.

Section V: Practical investigation handout

After completing the experiment in class time, you will submit your answers to the discussion questions provided.
