1) Background/introduction
The aim is to provide a background to condition(s), need for rehabilitation and need for the specific rehab technology (VR, Electrical Stim, Exoskeletons etc) which could include things like the need for more intensive rehab and lack of access to traditional rehab. Obviously use references.
2) A reasoning for mechanism of effect (how does the technology promote movement recovery)
You should use literature to present a) the evidence for any effect (include limitations/caveats to this evidence) and b) a reasoned account of how the technology might work (e.g. motivation, increased intensity, feedback, mechanical support, exciting motor cortex etc)
3) A description of the technology either to be improved or an entirely novel technology
This could be combined with section two if it flows more easily but simply this should describe the technology and how it functions (use figures if possible). You might want to comment on different models/types and perhaps how it has evolved. You should also include the issues with the technology that you would like to address (e.g. more feedback, more appropriate games, lower cost, portability, more suited to principles of rehab, user friendly etc etc). Alternatively you could use this section to outline an idea for a novel technology, if you are doing this you should point out the limitations of current similar technologies (or indeed traditional rehab) and therefore the need for the technology.
You could include an initial list of desirable attributes for your new/improved technology i.e. what it should do.
4) A detailed outline of how you plan to design the new technology or improve the existing one, showing all stages from concept generation to first prototype
This should read a bit like the methods section of a mini proposal. Describe the overall design approach you would use and the stages to develop/improve the technology beginning at concept generation (who would do this, what approaches/techniques would you take) all the way through to final testing of a prototype for commercialisation. So you might include detail on the user groups you would recruit at each stage, how would you test the prototype (case studies, pilot RCT, feasibility study, cohort study, longitudinal etc). You might consider things like safety testing, usability and of course efficacy (although this would take numerous studies and might be better done by independent people). Another thing you might include is how would you would test the acceptability of the technology, for home/clinical use.
