Highlights
1. Proposed Database Platform- Microsoft Access
Given that most professional devices in a traditional work setting possess some aspect of Microsoft Office capabilities, the most suitable platform for a simple Database would be Microsoft Access. However, due to the requirement for more advanced features, Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio will be utillised. Like any Microsoft patented product, the User-friendliness of this database system makes it an extremely attractive choice when considering the pros and cons of choosing a database. Not just for initial implementation, but for ongoing maintenance requirements that may be conducted by the end user. Direct imports from .csv files and easy definition of keys and metadata also serve to further balance the choice of databases in favor of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Potential disadvantages may however include the technical understanding required for alteration of SQL queries and database functionality post implementation, for things such as maintenance and troubleshooting etc.
2. Database Functionality and Information Storage
There are many aspects of functionality that relate to the creation of a fully operational Database, with several key features prominent in both the planning and implementation stages. Firstly, allowing for information and data storage to occur at a single centralized location (such as a Program Files Library). This means less ambiguity among data transfer and creation operations, and easier ready access to files stored and maintained by the database platform. Secondly, allowing the stored data to be shared amongst users (both locally and online). This ties in to the accessibility and security aspects, where the data may be viewed by all those permitted and altered by those designated. Third, the provision of a User interface to enable the input and alteration of data and information. To ensure the machine is able to understand the requirements of the user, the database program acts as an interpreter for inputted code to allow the machine to conduct the operation as intended. Finally, backups are created to ensure loss-prevention of data and database design elements. To prevent erroneous data corruptions or complete data losses, database platforms must regularly back up the inputted data.
