Aim
The aim of the Case Study Assignment is to encourage students to reflect on the content of lectures so that they fully understand the subject. It is designed to encourage students to undertake further research and learning in support of lecture materials provided by lecturers and to start to apply their new knowledge to specific situations.
Task description:
The floor plan view (Level 1) shown below is an extension of a two-story building. The selected suspended floor type is an ‘in-situ’ reinforced concrete slab of 172 mm thickness. As shown in the plan view, the suspended floor will be supported by a 270mm wide double-brick cavity wall (loadbearing) at all edges. Assume that the suspended floor will be supported on both leaves of the cavity walls. An additional internal support is a universal beam, which will be supported on two reinforced concrete column
Provide a report to describe the design and construction perspectives of the above-suspended floor slab. Your report should answer the following questions.
Explain if the suspended slab is one way or two way span
Show the deflection diagram under loading, indicating tension and compression fibers (you will not need to use a scale or know the exact amount of deflection: this is a rough sketch only). Mention the assumed end restraints (pinned or fixed?).
Provide the detailed drawing of the cross-section (X-X) to facilitate the construction process. You will not need to detail the slab-wall connection in this question. Pay critical attention to the reinforcement details. No scale is required but fully annotated neat sketch must be submitted.
Provide an annotated sketch to show the slab-wall connection (no scale required).
Check if the current design satisfies the NCC (2019) sound performance requirements. If not, what are the required amendments to the design? Assume that the building is Class 3.
If composite concrete/steel formwork slab construction is to be used as an alternative solution, what will be the required slab thickness? Assume a live load of 4kPa and use Data Sheet 01 at the end.
Provide a comparison on the pros and cons of the selected slab type (i.e. in-situ reinforced concrete) with compared to other suspended floor types used in Western Australia. Neglect timber floors since they will not be covered in this unit before the due date.
