Create an argument for why this is important and support it with scholarly research. Research Question: Can electronic media use in primary school-aged children increase their numeracy skills? Hypotheses
1. It is hypothesised that children in Year 5 using electronic media within the government recommended guidelines will have higher NAPLAN numeracy scores than children whose use is above the recommended guides.
2. For those children within the recommended guidelines, it is hypothesised that children actively interacting with electronic media have higher NAPLAN numeracy scores than children passively interacting with electronic media.
3. The amount of recreational media use will have no bearing on the amount of time spent on electronic media use to complete homework.
Methods: Participants: 474 Year 5 children from 3 primary schools in suburban Sydney were invited to participate (one each from the public, Catholic and independent sector). 212 children returned parental consent forms. Of this group of 212, 52% were identified as female, 48% as male with no other identifier. Average age 10 years, 7 months. Average years of schooling 5 years, 4 months. 100% of children were at or above the national minimum standard for numeracy. Materials: NAPLAN Numeracy scale and short parental questionnaire measuring electronic media usage need to be described. Procedure: How was the study conducted? What did the experimenters and participants do to test the hypotheses?
Study Design: Quasi-experimental, between-subjects design (i.e. comparing people in pre- existing groups). Two independent variables were employed: firstly the study investigated students who were high vs low use users of electronic media (ELM). That is, year 5 students who met or were under the recommended guidelines for ELM use (low users) vs those who exceeded recommended limits (high users). The second independent variable was whether that ELM use was active or passive. Two DV were evaluated, depending on the hypothesis being addressed. The first was the average NAPLAN scaled score for numeracy and the second was amount of time spent on ELM completing homework.
Results: Provide descriptive statistics. How many people ended up in each group? What were the means and standard deviations of each group? Provide results of hypothesis testing, i.e. 3 x independent samples t-tests Discussion: Were our hypotheses supported or not? How does that align with previous literature? What were the strengths and limitations of our study? What is a future study we could do to continue our investigation into this topic? What are the implications of our findings in a day-to-day sense?
