Section A: Business Case

As discussed during the Project management module, a project MUST always provide strategic value to the organisation conducting the project. In addition to a one-page project introduction providing background information about your project, you are required to produce a formal business case providing the reader with a thorough understanding of the strategic and financial objectives for conducting your project. In keeping with the traditional layout of a business case, your business case must also include an analysis of the relevant stakeholders and a detailed risk analysis. Provide details of the metrics used in each of the business case sections. As an example, you may choose to detail a SWOT analysis, Balanced Scorecard, Weighted scoring method, Aggregate plan and or provide the relevant financial calculations such as Net Present Value (NPV) of projected cash-flows, Return on Investment and the payback analysis Section B: Initiating (10 marks)

Having produced a business case, and assuming that your project meets the strategic, financial and risk hurdles acceptable to your organisation, you may assume your project is moving ahead. Two documents produced during the Initiating stages of a project, are:

a. Developing a Project Charter (template provided).

b. Developing a Team Contract (template provided).

Section C: Planning (40 marks)

c. Develop a Work Breakdown Structure for the project tasks

i. You should use the phased approach within a tabular structure.

ii. Please develop your project WBS to level as many levels as is needed. I.e levels 1, 2, 3, + (if necessary)

d. Develop a Network Diagram specifying the relationships between tasks.

i. Your Network Diagram should display ALL of the task information represented on your WBS, and the relationships between them.

ii. Notation should be as specified in your class work activity.

e. Develop a Gantt Chart showing the scheduling and resources for the project.

i. Your Gantt chart should display the task information up to the same level as the WBS and network diagram.

ii. You should also enter your (human) resources allocated to the various tasks in resource sheet view, and make sure that these are displayed on the final Gantt chart.

iii. Show all information as specified in your class work activity.

iv. Should you not have access to MS Project, you can make use of Project Libre.

v. In the worst case, you may use the spreadsheet template provided, and draw the Gantt Chart neatly by hand, or annotate directly into the MS Excel file.

Section D: Accompanying Documentation (35 marks) Each of the planning documents described above should be accompanied by a short explanation as to what is going on in the planning document.(+-1/2 page each). Write an accompanying document to your project plans highlighting areas of concern that need to monitored and controlled during the implementation of the project Having now produced your project plan, you are required to reflect on your project in terms of risk. While your business case will provide a detailed risk analysis of your project prior to the planning phase, you have now worked through the planning process and it is expected that you have greater insights into your project given the planning process. Reflect on these insights by describe the potential risks associated with the project and propose mitigation strategies for dealing with these risks should they occur.
