Background

Narcissism in often a characteristic attributed to individuals who are excessively self-absorbed, selfish and egoistical, self-enhancing, arrogant and shameless. Yet, those who study this distinguish vulnerable (hypersensitive/covert) narcissism from grandiose (classic egomaniac) narcissism by focusing on how the self-absorption is expressed differently among these two types. For vulnerable narcissists, we see a strong comorbidity with neuroticism, depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, but we often see the opposite with regard to grandiose forms of narcissism. Most relevant here, research has shown that grandiose narcissism is commonly found to be characteristic of leadership from the boardroom to the cabinet room
