Assignment Task

You are expected to perform an exploratory factor analysis on the items developed to create a new measure of and describe the steps taken to select the final items. You will also need to evaluate the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability, validity) of your final scale.

Background

Based on what appears to be happening in the world currently, there appears to be growing distrust of politicians. While trust is an important construct in relation to the success of human interactions, there is little consensus on exactly what trust is (PytlikZilla & Kimbrough, 2016). Despite this, it is generally considered that it involves positive expectations of a trustor (i.e., the person who is trusting another person) directed at a target (i.e., the trustee), and a willingness by the trustor to be vulnerable or in some way dependent on the trustee (Mayer et al., 1995)

While there are multiple forms of trust, social trust involves a person placing trust in individuals, groups, or institutions that they may not have personal experience with or a high level of knowledge about (Hendriks et al., 2016). Unlike interpersonal trust, there is often little direct previous experience that helps to provide clear knowledge of another person/group/institution’s motivations, interests or abilities.

According to Mayer et al. (1995), the factors that are considered when formulating trust of a person/group/organisation are whether it/they have a high level of ability/competence, are benevolent, and have integrity. However, there have been minor variations on these factors. A measure developed by Critchley (2008) to assess trust in scientists used the factors of self-interest, benevolence, and competence. The measure developed by Hendriks et al. (2016) to examine trust in online science communicators included the factors of expertise, integrity, and benevolence.

Currently, little research exists on measuring trust in politicians. For example, in the European Values Survey (see Marien & Hooge, 2011) respondents are asked to rate their trust (0 = Do not trust, 10 = Complete trust) to single items about the country’s parliament, political parties, and politicians. Similarly, Hammar and Jagers (2006) asked a single question, “Generally speaking, how great is your trust in Swedish politicians?” (1 = Do not trust, 4 = Complete trust).

To develop a more extensive measure of trust in politicians, your task is to develop a measure of trust in politicians based on the dimensions of self-interest, integrity, benevolence, and competence.
