Background
In humans, putative augmentation of dopamine (DA) efflux via administration of the DA and norepinephrine precursor tyrosine has been shown to improve task-switching performance, and inhibitory control suggesting a causal role of DA in regulating cognitive flexibility (CF) [1-4].

A principal mechanism by which this occurs is through an activation of the midbrain-striatum-prefrontal cortex dopaminergic pathway, whereby DA extracellular concentrations increase by up to 300% depending on the type of DA agonist used. To block these effects, one could administer GABA receptor-specific agonists [5-7], but these require medical prescription and have significant side effects, or use the tyrosine/phenylalanine depletion procedure [8-13], however this produces nausea and it takes approximately 5 hours to reduce DA concentrations, making testing rather impractical.

A way around this is to administer synthetic GABA, commonly found as a food supplement, and although receptor non-specific, may exert a similar DA suppression effect as GABA agonists or DA depletion procedures. Several studies have used synthetic GABA to modulate physiological stress, alpha waves, and action selection [14-16].
