Highlights
The first paper, by Lewandowsky et al. (2012) provides an overview of what misinformation is, its persistence even after a correction (known as the continued influence effect), and possible interventions which may reduce the initial acceptance of misinformation or, once accepted, assist with removal after a correction.
Lewandowsky, Ecker, Seifert, Schwarz & Cook (2012). Misinformation and its correction: Continued influence and successful debiasing. Next, we focus on an intervention in the form of a training activity which is used to reduce misinformation acceptance. Is there a means of training people to better identify misinformation in the form of false news reports?
Roozenbeek & van der Linden (2019). Fake news confers psychological resistance against online misinformation. The type of misinformation (false news) and the intervention described in this paper provides the focus of our study. But in addition to identifying an intervention which might make us more resistant to false news, in cognitive psychology we are fundamentally interested in the mental processes which might determine the ways humans behave – in this case, mental processes that might determine our susceptibility to false news. In our study we are specifically interested in whether individual differences in executive functions might be responsible for any reduction in this susceptibility through the training intervention
The next article addresses reasons why we are susceptible to false news. Is it because the content of the false news aligns with our pre-existing beliefs about the world (motivated reasoning), or is it due to how effectively we think about these things (analytical reasoning).
Pennycook & Rand (2019). Lazy, not biased: Susceptibility to partisan fake news is better explained by lack of reasoning than by motivated reasoning.
