Individual differences are typically used in two distinct ways in psychology, and the laboratory program and assessments have been designed to introduce these to students in PSYC213. First, a person is studied in some depth to ascertain who they are to provide them (or others) with insight into how particular characteristics play a role in the person’s situation. This typically takes the form of a psychological assessment or a case study of a “client” and will include one or more measures of relevant individual differences which is assessed, compared to “norms”, and reviewed in the context of background information. The outcome of such an assessment can be a “client report” which provides the client with information on themselves which may help them answer a personal question (e.g., “what career am a suited to”, or “how does ‘who am I’ affect how I study?”).
