General Overview of the Assignment

You are going to design, ‘conduct’, analyse and write up data for a research study. Initially, you will invent your own theoretical rationale for the investigation, and test a specific set of hypotheses (based on the contrast coefficients provided below). You will then investigate patterns observed in the data (i.e., after it has been ‘collected’) and set up some additional, supplementary contrasts to test the significance of these observed patterns. You are required to write a brief report based on the analyses following APA guidelines.

Design a two-factor, between-subjects, fixed-effects study with two levels on one factor (IVA) and four levels on the other (IVB). The design should allow for the examination of questions of interest in some area of psychology and can portray either a 'true' experiment, in that participants can be randomly allocated to conditions, or a ‘quasi’ experiment in which no more than one of the factors is a classification variable, i.e., participant characteristics like “Gender” or “Age”. Be sure to clearly define your dependent variable, which must be measured in whole numbers (i.e., no decimal places) and have a range of 0-50. The following steps will assist you in setting up the study.

Step 1: Design the study

You can be as imaginative and creative as you wish (e.g., set in the distant past or future or on a make-believe planet), but it must be something unambiguously relevant to psychology. In designing the study, you must set theoretically meaningful contrasts in advance of collecting the data, that would be tested by the contrast coefficients provided below, while also adhering to the following constraints:

1. You MUST use all the contrast coefficients in the tables below.
2. The interaction contrasts should follow from the main-effect contrasts.
3. These are NOT trend contrasts. Do not design trend hypotheses.
4. Designs cannot use examples from lectures or tutorials.

Step 2: ‘Collect’ your data

Once you have designed your study, you will “collect” sample data which has been obtained for you from an appropriate population by an independent participant recruitment company (so as to minimise researcher biases).
