Write a report on the observational research that the whole group has undertaken.

There are various required components of this report, namely:

• A test of inter-observer reliability, comparing a sample of the coding with that of an independent coder, using Cohen’s Kappa.

• The analysis should report on some descriptive statistics to ‘frame’ the observational work, and should then move on to more sophisticated nested and sequential analyses.

The report should be submitted in conventional format. Only a relatively small amount of theoretical background will be needed in the introduction and the discussion – I don’t want you to spend a long time on the substantive aspects of this work (focus on the methods). Only limited referencing is needed, to material on observational methods (and to studies that give some kind of a precedent for the methods we have used). Focus on the business of analysing the observational data, and discussing the analyses. The discussion should contain the usual elements of ‘summarising’, ‘finding meaning’, ‘critically evaluating’ and ‘considering implications for practice and/or for further research’.
