Psychology Assignment Claim Intelligence is fixed.
Rationale

While intelligence is one of the most talked about subjects in psychology, there is no standard definition of what exactly signifies intelligence. Some researchers have suggested that intelligence is a single, general ability. Others believe that intelligence encompasses a range of aptitudes, skills, and talents.
Intelligence involves some different mental abilities including logic, reasoning, problem-solving, and planning. While the subject of intelligence is one of the largest and most heavily researched, it is also one of the topics that generate the most debate. (Morin, 2019)
One of the more recent ideas to emerge is Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences.

  • Gardner proposed that the traditional idea of intelligence, based on IQ testing, did not fully depict a person's abilities. His theory proposed eight different intelligences based on skills and abilities:
  • Interpersonal intelligence: The capacity to detect and respond appropriately to the moods, motivations, and desires of others.
  • Logical-mathematical intelligence: The ability to think abstractly and recognise logical or numerical patterns.
  • Intrapersonal intelligence: The capacity to be self-informed and compatible with inner feelings, values, and beliefs.
  • Kinaesthetic intelligence: The ability to control body movements and sequences.
  • Musical intelligence: The ability to produce and appreciate pitch and rhythm.
  • Visual intelligence: The capacity to think in image, to visualize accurately and abstractly.
  • Naturalistic intelligence: The ability to recognize and categorize animals, plants, and other objects in nature.
  • Linguistic intelligence: Well-developed verbal skills and sensitivity to the sounds, meanings, and rhythms of words.
  • He also proposed that people are not born with all of the intelligence they will ever have. Gardner’s theory has revolutionised the way intelligence is viewed and has led to further the research into intelligence (Marenus, 2020).
  • Recent twin and adoption studies suggest that while the effect of the family environment is substantial in early childhood, it becomes quite small by late adolescence. These findings suggest that differences in the lifestyles of families, whatever their importance may be for many aspects of children's lives, make little long-term difference for the skills measured by intelligence tests.
  • Research Question
  • Is everyone’s intelligence predetermined?
