Assignment Task: Phil aged 19 he had just finished his apprenticeship, a skillful local footballer, recently married to his girlfriend Rose 18, who had recently given birth to his son Jarred. With the help of his family and Rose's family, they had taken well to family life. Phil seeming to thrive on the responsibility of being a parent and provider, just 4 years ago he had left school early, almost to the relief of his teachers, supposedly "useless at anything that didn't involve kicking an inflated bag of leather or blowing stuff up." A minor run-in with the Police saw Phil before the Magistrate and given a choice, to get an apprenticeship within 3 months or probably have a conviction recorded that would make him unemployable in his small hometown. Phil had been lucky, his football coach ran an automotive business offered him the required opportunity and with the firm guidance of his parents, he settled down and got back on track. So when Rose asked him to look after Jarred one afternoon, when Jarred was nearly 5 months old, he was more than confident and eager to do his share. Phil noticed that Jarred seemed more settled when being jiggled upon his shoulder, and so looking out into his parent's backyard thought, maybe if I just sat on the trampoline and bounced gently Jarred might "like that too". Phil knew something was wrong very quickly; he called his mum, and rushed Jarred to the Hospital. The news was devastating; Jarred had suffered permanent brain injury and would be totally blind for the rest of his life. The Doctor was scathing toward Phil’s idiocy and questioned Roses judgement in letting such an incompetent person look after a young baby. The doctor left them, saying that Jarred would be hospitalised for some time, but before his parents would be allowed anywhere near him, they would need the permission of the Department workers and Police....nodding in the direction of the casualty department doors, where a policewoman and another woman were entering... Phil stood before the same magistrate who had challenged him 4 years previously. The magistrate, said he noted the early admission of guilt and the level of underlying ignorance contributing to the assault, but that the community had an expectation that people who are parents have the ability to care for their children properly and sentenced Phil to 18 months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 10 months...Phil in shock just kept saying over and over – “it was just an accident”.
