Assignment Task

Introduction

The aim of the study was to develop and assess the reliability and validity of a self-report measure of mind wandering (MW). You will need to write a brief Introduction that leads logically to that aim. In particular, you will need to include in the Introduction: a definition of MW that is consistent with the one that you used to develop the measure and a brief discussion of how the construct of MW has been found to relate to personality traits in past research. There is no need to read beyond the key references for this exercise (the key references are available via the Unit Reading (Leganto) link on iLearn). At the end of the Introduction, you should state the aim of the research and state the hypotheses of the study - these should relate to (1) the reliability and (2) the validity of the scores on the MW measure that you have developed. The hypotheses should follow logically from the body of the Introduction.

Method

The Method should include sections describing Participants (How many? Who? How selected?), Materials (How was the MW measure developed and what are its features? What are the features of the other measures used?), and Procedure (How were the data gathered?).

Result

In the Results section include descriptive information about the scores on the MW measure (mean, standard deviation), present statistics to describe the reliability of scores on the MW measure, and present statistics to describe the validity of scores on the MW measure.

Discussion

In the Discussion, your purpose is to briefly summarise the results in light of the hypotheses regarding reliability and validity of the scores on the MW measure, discuss any unexpected results (especially with reference to factors that might impact validity coefficients), comment on limitations of the study (especially where those limitations are related to unexpected findings), comment on future research directions (especially how other psychometric properties of the MW measure might be tested), and draw a sensible conclusion regarding the reliability and validity of the scores on the measure developed in class.

Assessment Criteria

Consistent with the MQ Assessment Policy, we use standards based assessment for the assignment. Your assignment will be marked using the standards described in the table below. In order to demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes, your work will be (at least) at a functional standard. The criteria within a standard operationalise the generic descriptions of the Grades defined in the MQ Assessment. Note that the descriptions in the policy are the descriptions for Final Grades in a unit, but were used as a guide for setting criteria for each standard for the assignment.

In order for a particular standard to be met, all of the criteria listed under the standard must have been met. Where criteria for more than one standard are met for a section, the standard applied for that section will be the lowest standard where a criterion is met. The standards translate to a grade in the following way:

• High Distinction: Outstanding
• Distinction: Superior
• Credit: Proficient
• Pass: Functional
• Fail: Below Expected Standards.

The overall grade for the written report will reflect the level of performance for each section and the section weighting
