You have been accepted as an intern with Queensland Health. Currently, you are completing a rotation within a department that has one of the following remits:

• Physical activity

• Sedentary behaviour

• A specific dietary behaviour

• Tobacco smoking

• Alcohol use or an alcohol-related harmful behaviour

• Road-related harmful behaviour

You may choose the same health behaviour as other assessment. Your chosen health behaviour should be considered within the context of a specified target population.

Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a report reviewing current evidence with respect to the application of a behaviour change theory construct to one of these health behaviours. They are seeking to understand the influence of that risk or protective factor (the theory construct) as it explains and predicts the health behaviour. A previous staff member has reviewed research on other constructs of the theory. The information will be used in the development of a new health promotion campaign.

You should choose a single theory construct. You will need to also cover a definition of the full theory and be explicit about what theoretical construct you are covering. You might consider the following theories: Theory of Planned Behaviour, Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, Protection Motivation Theory, Prototype Willingness Model. There are other health behaviour change theories, please check with your lecturer if you have any questions

You may cover:

a. Brief rationale for the chosen health behaviour and population (50-100 words), e.g., DALYs, health expenditure

b. Definition of theory and construct (150-200 words)

c. Analyse the theory/construct as relevant to the health behaviour (1000 words). The key task here is to provide evidence of how well the construct explains the behaviour for the target population and in what context. Studies may be of interventions, for example showing that as the theory construct changed so did the target behaviour for the population. Studies may be predictive, for example showing earlier beliefs predict the behaviour at a later time point. You are to analyse this research. Ask questions that cover,

ii. how likely is it that the construct predicts the behaviour at a later time point?
