Assignment Task:

Introduction:

NCDs and injury are major health priorities in Australia and globally. Given the extensive research on NCDs, well-established risk factors have been identified and efforts to reduce and prevent NCDs must focus on reducing the levels of these known risk factors. Most countries, including Australia, monitor the population levels of risk factors through national health surveillance systems. These data show the magnitude of the problem in different segments of the population. Health promotion action is needed to reverse and reduce the level of these risk factors. Globally, nationally and within each State in Australia, governments are asking “what needs to be done?” Frequently, decision-makers call for a summary of the evidence and key recommendations. This assignment is structured around providing a response to this situation.

Task Select ONE RISK FACTOR from the list below, each of which is known to be related to an increased risk of NCDs (such as CVD, cancer, diabetes). In addition, unhealthy consumption of alcohol is known to be associated with additional increased risk of injury.

1. Unhealthy eating

part of the obesity agenda and a risk factor for NCDs

2. Physical inactivity

part of the obesity agenda and an independent risk factor for NCDs

3. Unhealthy consumption of alcohol

a risk factor for NCDs and strongly associated with increased risk of injury

For ONE of the above risk factors, each student will write a literature review paper using the instructions provided below. The report should be presented in four sections.

The purpose of this assignment is threefold: provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with undertaking a public health literature search and summarising key information to inform and support decision-makers; for students to become familiar with identifying the causes of risk factors; and for students to critique the current evidence base and make informed decisions on what recommendations can be made based on current knowledge. In addition, this assignment provides students with the opportunity to develop in?depth knowledge about a priority health issue which can be used in Assignment 2 of this unit.

Instructions and Guidelines for Literature Review Paper: Assignment 1

Section 1.

Introduce the selected risk factor and summarise the impact and consequences in Australia.

• Introduce and define the risk factor

• Present a brief summary of the issue and its impact in Australia – this can include health consequences, cost and any other impacts

• Outline the purpose and scope of the paper

• This section should be approx. 300 words

Section 2.

Present a summary of what is known about the causes of the risk factor.

• Using available literature and specifically focussing on recent review papers, students should explain and summarise the key known causes of the selected risk factor

• Students should review and consider the health behaviour theories introduced in Week 3 to ensure that your reading and summary is considering different types of causes

• Students should attempt to identify the more important cases where the evidence has established this and identify any differences in the causes for different subpopulation groups (that is for males or females, by age, ethnicity or another characteristic)

• This section should be approx. 1000 words

Section 3.

This section should introduce and summarise what is known about effective preventive strategies, that is, what health promotion actions have been shown to reduce the causes of the risk factor. This type of research is often referred to as ‘intervention’ research. In health promotion, different behavioural programs, policy actions or other types of ‘interventions’ are identified, piloted and then tested in different situations to see if they can change the behaviour (risk factor). The results provide an evidence base on whether the strategy (‘intervention’) works or not. Sometimes interventions work for some groups but not for others.

• The scientific study of most risk factors has provided a very large volume of literature. Students are advised to identify and use recent review level papers that aim to summarise the evidence for a specific issue or an aspect of the issue. Major review papers have been done on all these risk factors.

• While reading these literature students should carefully consider and try to identify the contexts and conditions in which the intervention has been shown to work. For example: with what populations; over how long; wider contextual issues such as in which country; in which settings; at what cost.

• Given the large scope of literature and to provide a limit to the scope of this assignment, students should identify TWO different strategies and summarise the evidence related to these strategies on their effectiveness; students should explain the ‘intervention’, summarise the evidence (i.e. what studies have been done and what are the results) and provide a critique of the evidence.

• Students may extend their reading to include specific studies in their selected area to learn more about the intervention, the context, the results etc. Review papers may not always provide you with everything you need to know.

• This section should be approx.

Section 4.

This section should provide a short summary and state a set of recommendations for 1. practice and 2. for future research.

• For Practice: decision-makers want to know what can be implemented now. Students should identify 2 specific strategies (that is health promotion actions/interventions) that can and should be implemented to address the risk factor; for each suggestion, there may be some conditions or limitations which should be noted against each recommendation (if needed)

• For Research: it is inevitable that we do not have all the answers and perfect knowledge (and most likely far from it), therefore there is likely to be a need for more health promotion research to guide future decisions. Students should identify 2 research priorities and provide a short justification for each recommendation

• Include a short concluding paragraph to reiterate key points

• This section should be approx.
