Learning Outcomes
This assessment addresses the following learning outcomes:
Instructions:
For this assessment, you will give a presentation to the class in small groups of 2 or 3. The presentation should last 15 minutes. In your presentation, you will propose an advocacy campaign relating to a specific public health problem. Your campaign will advocate for a specific outcome to address this public health problem. The outcome should be policy relevant – for example, a new policy or a change to an existing policy. This outcome could be a change to regulation and/or legislation, or a commitment from Government to increase funding for your public health issue.
Your proposed advocacy campaign should be a new idea (you can be creative in giving it a name). In developing this idea, you should research pre?existing advocacy campaigns in public health. This will provide you with insight into ‘real world’ advocacy campaigns and the sorts of strategies and activities they employ.
As a group decide the public health problem you will address and the solution you wish to achieve.
In your presentation you should:
• Clearly articulate the health problem to be addressed through advocacy, highlighting the importance of the issue, supported by evidence.
• Clearly articulate the policy relevant outcome you wish to achieve from advocacy.
• In describing the outcome, you should demonstrate an understanding of how your advocacy campaign contributes towards policy development.
• You should also display an understanding of how evidence can contribute towards your advocacy campaign.
• Describe your advocacy campaign. What will your campaign do? Describe specific strategies for:
o Translating public health evidence for advocacy purposes: how will your campaign use evidence?
o Building a coalition and gaining support from stakeholders, including community stakeholders
o Using media advocacy and communicating your messages to the wider public
In addressing the above points, consider the appropriateness of advocacy activities such as:
Advertising: via TV, print media, social media and billboards.
Community?based campaigning: protests, letter writing and petitions.
Strategies for empowering communities: how can your advocacy campaign involve and empower community stakeholders?
Engaging with high profile supporters and coalitions.
