Assessment Task

This assessment requires you to complete the following tasks:

(1) Perform the data collection, transcription and analysis, and interpret the findings.

(2) Present a summary of your findings in a five-minute presentation.

Please refer to the Instructions for details on how to complete this assessment.

Context

Public health researchers perform data collection to explore the answers to research questions using the appropriate methodologies and methods. Qualitative data can be collected by different methods, such as interviews, focus groups, observations and textual and visual analyses. After collecting the data, the information needs to be analysed by adopting different approaches (e.g., by reading through the transcripts, analysing the content and developing themes, codes and categories).

Data analyses help researchers to convert substantial amounts of data into a manageable format without losing its meaning. The results of the analysis are considered the ‘findings’ of the research. It is important to communicate and disseminate the information found through this process.

In this assessment, you are required to perform the data collection, analysis and transcription and to deliver a presentation. The data collection can be done with reference to Assessments 1 and 2.

Instructions

In collecting the data, ensure that you:

  1. Review the methodology and methods that you described in Assessment 2.
  2. Proceed with the same research question(s) and methods stated in Assessment 2 but involve sample participants. Your learning facilitator will guide you on this.
  3. Contact your learning facilitator for the best alternatives if you need to collect data in different topic or settings (i.e., different to what you stated in Assessment 2).
  4. Conduct interviews with 3–4 people for about 15–30 minutes remotely or face to face. Interviews conducted via email or text are not acceptable. Check with your learning facilitator whether the method of data collection, number of participants and time has been changed. .
  5. Follow the ethical guidelines as much as possible (e.g., inform the participants of the purpose of the research and obtain their consent before commencing the interviews).
  6. Use open-ended questions to gain a more comprehensive view of the topic being studied.
  7. (Audio) record the interviews for transcription, as it would be impossible to transcribe the interview on paper during the interview. If you have conducted an online interview and have video recordings, convert them to audio recordings.
  8. Acknowledge and thank your participants for their time and information.

In transcribing the data, ensure that you:

  1. Listen to the recordings very carefully and transcribe the audio word for word.
  2. Save the transcripts in a Word file (in English), as you need to upload the transcripts to the Appendices section of your assessment.

In analysing the data, ensure that you:

  1. Decide which approach and technique are most suitable for the data you collected.
  2. Follow the principles of the chosen approach and the steps of the analysis.
  3. Save the codes and themes in a Word file (in English) and also save the raw data file you have analysed as you might need to upload these documents as a part of your assessment.

Deliverables

Write a report of the findings. In this report, you need to:

  1. Provide a suitable title for your report (e.g., ‘Research findings of ‘[insert your topic here]’)
  2. Write a brief introduction describing how the data were collected and analysed.
  3. Describe and discuss the findings with suitable themes and categories.
  4. Write a conclusion that outlines the gist of the findings. Deliver a presentation of the findings.

Format Parameters

Your report on your findings should contain the ‘Title’, ‘Introduction’, ‘Findings and Discussion’ and ‘Conclusion’ sections in a single file (Word docx) formatted in 12-point Arial font with 1.5 line spacing. See the instructions above on what to include in these sections.

The front page of these documents should have the student’s name and identification number, subject name and code and assessment number.

The total word count for the report is 750–1,000 words. The transcripts and data analysis documents should appear after the contents of the report and will be considered appendices.

The data analysis document needs to illustrate how you analysed the data (e.g., the codes and themes identified in the transcripts). You can also upload raw sketches of the data analysis (if you have done any) by taking photographs of the raw sketches and pasting them in the same Word file. There is no limit on the word count for the appendices.
