Abstract
Public awareness is rapidly growing regarding the serious emotional trauma, physical harm and psychological barriers to learning that witnessing domestic violence can cause to children. Children living in violent homes are beginning to be seen as recognised ‘victims’ and there is an increase in research literature regarding how the lives of these children are affected as a result of witnessing violence in the family home(Cunningham and Baker,2004).This dissertation aims to investigate how witnessing domestic violence in the family home affects a child’s educational performance by  conducting a systematic review through searching electronic databases to select, appraise, extract, synthesise and analyse primary articles to establish the impact of domestic violence on children’s academic performance. Well being and healthy relationships are the foundation to learning and this paper will examine the interventions to address the need of the children that are affected by domestic violence.

Background

Children that are exposed to this form of violence may be left with emotional threats, psychological disorders, the feeling of hopelessness and a sense of vulnerability. All of the indicated effects have a negative impact on their academic lives(Kanchiputu & Mwale, 2016).
