Public Health Perspective of Primary Palliative Care

Assignment Task

Reflect critically on how the principles of public health palliative care might apply to an area in which you are engaged or in which you've developed an interest. Ideally this essay should allow you to write about a topic that may be useful to you in your work or professional (and/or personal) development.

You might for example select a problem that has presented itself as you’ve participated in this subject. The essay should demonstrate your knowledge of and engagement with principles of public health palliative care to your selected topic. You could:

1. Discuss the implications public health palliative care principles might have for your professional practice with clients who have a life-threatening illness.

2. Write a critical evaluation of a palliative care policy document (selected in consultation with the coordinators) in light of public health palliative care principles.

3. Discuss issues involved in developing public health palliative care services in multicultural Australian contexts OR another country of choice.

4. Discuss recent legislation passed by Parliament of Victoria concerning Advance Care Directives OR Voluntary Assisted Dying in light of public health palliative care principles.

A more focused version of one of these topics – or another topic altogether – may be negotiated with the coordinators. For example, if you are taking this elective in a postgraduate program other than the MPH you may wish to write your essay on a topic that draws upon insights from that other program in dialogue with public health palliative care.

The requirements for this critical essay (key tasks, presentation requirements) are

1. Indicate (by outlining a personal connection or professional interest) why you’ve chosen this topic.

2. In your discussion make use of relevant literature – media resources, clinical studies, professional practice accounts, social or cultural studies. With this final critical essay you’re expected to go beyond the materials supplied through LMS and locate key references by searching wider literatures related to your topic.

3. Critically assess the material you’ve gathered, with particular attention to social and public health concerns (for example, you might evaluate your findings using the Ottawa Charter or a population health model, a life span model, person-centred care, or just a general social model of health)

4. Apply your findings to draw some conclusions and/or make some recommendations, including a comment on what you’ve learned that’s relevant to the interest you’ve declared at the start of your essay.
