Assignment Task:

Aim of the assignment:
assessing the performance of a Pump As Turbine (PAT), drawing the characteristic curves of the unit at a fixed speed, comparing them with the behaviour of the machine like a pump.

Assignment submission should consist of a scientific laboratory report, including introduction, objectives, methodology, results, discussion and conclusions.

Data has been collected from the above PAT test apparatus following the procedure below and the resulting raw data is available from blackboard to download:

Determine the runaway curve:

  1. set the bypass valve as fully closed and the other two in-series valves (butterfly and control valve) fully open;
  2. start the supply pump at full capacity;
  3. manually open the bypass valve until the flow through the PAT is reduced to about 3 l/s (180 l/min).

Determine the locked rotor curve:

  1. Lock the PAT shaft via a vice grip;
  2. set the bypass valve as fully closed and the other two in-series valves (butterfly and control valve) fully open;
  3. start the supply pump at full capacity;
  4. manually open the bypass valve until the flow through the PAT is reduced to about 3 l/s (180 l/min).

Record the PAT behaviour at a fixed shaft speed (1200, 1400, 1600, 1800, 2000 or 2200 RPM):

  1. set the bypass valve as fully closed and the other two in-series valves (butterfly and control valve) fully open;
  2. start the supply pump at full capacity;
  3. manually open the bypass valve until the flow through the PAT is reduced to about 3 l/s (180 l/min);
  4. set the desired VSD frequency (e.g. 50 Hz);
  5. start the VSD in forward rotation and wait until the desired speed is reached. The VSD will dictate the induction motor/generator to either accelerate (i.e. absorbing power from the grid) or to decelerate (i.e. generating power);
  6. manually proceed to slowly close the bypass valve in about 60s, until the entire flow produced by the supply pump is conveyed through the PAT.
