Established in 1843, it provides a wide range of financial services including insurance, life insurance, pensions and investment products, with over 5.8 million customers. With over 5,500 staff, working in 14 offices across the UK, it prides itself on its friendly, helpful and award-winning customer service, which it attributes to its employees. (LV= website, 2019). You are a newly recruited trainee HR Officer in LV.

Activity 1 – (LO1)

The Human Resource Manager has asked you to compile a section to be included in an Induction Pack for trainees on the Management development program, which:

b) Assesses how these functions relate to workforce planning and resourcing within LV and therefore its importance to the organization as a whole.
c) Critically evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of LV=’s Recruitment and Selection process, as outlined in Appendix 1. You should consider how effective the process is in respect to selecting the best applicant for a role, as well as the extent to which it assists LV= in becoming an ‘employer of choice’.
Tips: Try to be evaluative and analytical in your answer. Refer to suitable academic sources as well as the material available on LV= and consider the nature of this organization, when considering the role of HRM and its recruitment and selection methods. Your answer to (c) should consider the strengths and weaknesses against the best practice of recruitment and selection and consider the range of other recruitment and selection methods available to the organization. Be realistic and practical in your evaluation and back this up with appropriate references, as much as possible.

This involves carrying out the following activities:
a) Create a person specification for this Personal Assistant role – using the job description provided (Appendix 2)
b) Review the CVs provided from the three job applicants for the role of Personal Assistant (in Appendix 3), based upon the person specification, which you compiled for task a) above and decide which (if any) of the applicants you would shortlist for interview. You must give detailed reasons for your decision (based on your person specification and the nature/culture of the organization).
c) Produce at least six competency-based questions to be asked at the selection interview for the Personal Assistant vacancy and justify your choice of questions

Tip: Try to take into consideration the nature of the job role nature and culture of the organization when answering the questions. It is important to use the job description provided in order to complete the person specification since this becomes the source document for the completion of both b) and c).

PART 2 - Employee performance, development and reward & Factors that influence HR decision making
Activity 3 (LO2)

LV= states that it “wouldn’t be the successful, fast-growing, excited –about-the-future business today” if it wasn’t for its “great people”. In recognition of that, it has as a variety of HR practices from the range of learning and development opportunities to the combination of rewards and benefits for its staff, with a
view to creating the most talented and motivated employees. Effective leadership plays an important part in bringing these elements together to enable business success.
The HR department is reviewing its working practices and you have been tasked with providing a summary report which critically evaluates the effectiveness of:
a) the learning and development opportunities for staff, from both an organization and staff perspective
b) the rewards and benefits provided by LV= to its staff, from both an organization and staff perspective

Tips: Try to support any claim or statement about LV= with a reference; when carrying out your evaluation you should consider motivational theory (for example, to what extent would these practices motivate staff? Or other relevant theory or compared with practices offered by other organizations). You should integrate the merit and distinction elements within your answer.

Activity 4 (LO3)

To help complete the review of HR and its contribution to the organization, you have been asked to provide a briefing paper which addresses the following:
