This subject provides a historical and contemporary overview of social psychology, introducing students to the key theories and research methods used to explain and predict people's thoughts, feelings and actions in social situations. Students will examine key concepts such as social perception, social influence, and social relations and develop an understanding of individual, cultural and contextual differences in social cognition. The applied nature of social psychology is highlighted with reference to the key areas of health and wellbeing, human relations and sustainable development

In this assessment, you will need to identify a current global issue, and undertake a literature review that will provide an evidence-based discussion on how social psychological theory can be applied to understand how a specific global issue has developed, and how it may be addressed.

A very large part of your work as a psychologist will involve transforming your academic knowledge into a format which is accessible to a wide range of people. This assessment task will provide you with an opportunity to explore this aspect of your development. In this assessment task, you will be required to transform your literature review from Assessment 2 into an article for The Conversation. You should use the content from your literature review to write the article, however, you will need to focus on appropriate findings to write a cohesive narrative article in the style of The Conversation. You have the option to present some or all of the material covered in your literature review.

The entry should be written into an easily digestible format for a non-expert audience. Your target is 600 words, so start with a clear idea of the most important point(s) you want to cover. You should work hard on the first paragraph because this is where you need to grab the reader’s interest. Start with a short, sharp statement of the article’s essential argument in no more than two sentences. Consider answering reader’s questions such as,and pique their interest with novel, relevant, or surprising material and/or perspective. TheConversation.com is one of Australia’s largest independent news and commentary sites, delivering expertise from the academic and research community directly to the public.

The Conversation has published more than 20,000 articles written by over 15,000 Australian academics and researchers from 878 institutions worldwide since they commenced operation in 2014. The target audience is large, with a reach of 5.4 million in Australia and 42 million worldwide. It is also incredibly diverse, so this will be a good exercise in finding that happy medium between reporting detailed, precise and accurate academic findings and clearly disseminating digestible information to members of the public while retaining the accuracy.

Introduction

Define or identify the general topic, issue, or area of concern, to provide an appropriate context for reviewing the literature and to tell your reader what they can expect to see in the work that follows. You may briefly point out overall trends in what has been published about the topic; gaps in research and scholarship. Establish your reason (point of view) for reviewing the literature and discuss the aim (i.e., what is the objective of your work?). This should be clear and concise.

Body

Typically contains a review of the topic; evaluation and analysis of existing knowledge; any areas of controversy that have appeared in the literature; limitations of previous literature; reasons for and purpose of the study being undertaken. This section is pivotal to the success of your work – it is here that your argument really unfolds, so use this space wisely and write as concisely as you can. Do not simply summarise results, but critically appraise the relevance and assumptions of the research findings you cite. In addition, synthesise information, themes, and findings from different sources based on what you have read rather than report each article separately.
