Task:

PY5001, Individual Difference and Diversity has only one assessment that represents 100% of the mark. It is a 2500 words essay offering an intersectional analysis of your own personality. The deadline for this assessment is on December the 71h at 4pm and must be submitted via Turnitin. The link for the submission will be made available one week in advance to the deadline and all students will receive the link for submission via moodle message and it will be also posted on the general forum on teams.
Important note: The Turnitin link will be set up using the anonymous marking option, this means that nor the markers neither the module leader would know which one is your essay.
The goal of the essay is to offer as much insight as possible on how the intersectional categories of sexuality, gender, class, race, disability, religion, and language interact to: 1) Shape each other in your everyday life experience. This means, for example, addressing questions such as: how your race is related to the ways you perform your gender? How your able or disabled body modifies your economic status? Or how your sexuality is or not consistent to your religious believes? Etc., and 2) to shape the individual that you are, this second point refers to your values, moral standards, priorities in life, believes, the ways you treat people, your personal politics, etc, in short, your personality.
As you know already from the lectures and the literature, there is no one single formula to write an intersectional analysis of your personality (you have several different examples on teams under week 5); therefore the following points refer to points you must cover in the essay, but the order and the actual structure of the essay is entirely up to you. Be creative, but make sure you cover this:

Identify where you stand in terms of all the intersectional categories. Use this section to offer a little bit of background of who you are. Are you black? White? Brown? Straight? Transgender? Queer? Gay? Abled? Disabled? High class? Working class? Muslim? Cristian? Atheist? Foreigner? British? What's your ethnic background? Is English your first language? Keep in mind that the answer to these questions might not be as straightforward, you might be a mixed race, non-binary, raised hight class but currently broke, with three nationalities (and three first languages) considering atheism but raised Cristian, etc. Whatever is your case, this first point is about giving some basic coordinates of where you are at in the social structure; in other words, tell the story of who you are by responding to the big categories of intersectionality: sexuality, gender, race, class, disability, religion, language. In this point is important to mention, if in order to describe yourself you must include another intersectional category that we haven't include such as edge, political views, culture, education, degree of normalized body (as in whether you are skinny, rather overweight, have suffered eating disorders, etc.) you can certainly include it.
2 As part of the analysis... Identify where you stand in terms of privilege/oppression. Remember that this is not a straightforward distinction where you belong to one or the other. An intersectional analysis should rather explain the interactions between your different levels of privilege and your different levels of oppression (we all have them) and specially the ways in which these multiple privileges/oppressions shape each other and open up the possibilities to express your personality. In this point it would be particularly relevant if you are able to offer real life examples showing the intricacies of privileges/oppression in your own life, for example your womaness might represent obstacles in your professional development, but your whiteness provides privilege that let you still progress professionally; or maybe your queerness complicates some aspects of your life such as acceptance everywhere, but your economic situation allows you to immerse yourself in the spaces that you want, etc. In other words, use this section to explain and illustrate how intersectional categories shape each other in your everyday life. Here is also a good idea to take a look to Rachel Liebert's slides regarding the "tips" to avoid tendencies to portrait yourself as over oppressed, make an effort and be critical of your privileges.
