Scenario
Society acknowledges that education can greatly improve the quality of life for both communities and individuals. This knowledge allows people to see the world through new eyes which opens up previously unknown possibilities. Seeking higher education can develop this insight and reveal potential opportunities for future success. Students choose their preferred field of study based on their academic strengths, interests and future career goals. The 21st century has brought about an increase in the number of students seeking higher education opportunities in Australia, particularly due to the wide array of disciplines available at Australian universities and the career opportunities they provide.
Gaining employment in one’s chosen field requires students to learn content knowledge. However, just as importantly students must also develop professional skills related to their chosen discipline and industry. As required by Australia’s 2015 Higher Education Standards Framework (Commonwealth of Australia as cited in Oliver & Jorre de St Jorre, 2018, p. 823) ‘the learning outcomes for a course (degree) must include generic skills important to employment and further study’. Many skills may be generic, while others are specific to particular industries and must be developed in university faculties for students to successfully complete the course of study and gain employment.
QUT management has contracted you to investigate 4 professional skills which students require to successfully gain employment in their chosen industry/faculty area. Your analysis requires you, as the researcher, to argue why your selected professional skills are the most important for students in your faculty to learn in order to gain employment after graduating. As part of your investigation the client, QUTIC Director, Ken Beutel, requires recommendations which will identify how these professional skills should be delivered to QUT students.
You are required to:
Explain the context and purpose of the report and justify using secondary evidence the importance of universities developing graduate employability skills (1.0 Introduction).
Research 4 professional skills (subtopic skills), that are necessary for students to be successful in your chosen industry/faculty area. Within each of the subtopics, identify one way (method) to develop this subtopic skill at university using secondary evidence and justify its importance for graduate employability (2.0 Discussion).
Reflect on your work and gather peer feedback to improve the quality of your submission.
