Assignment Task

The overall word count should not exceed words. The reference list at the end, in-text references, and any figures or tables are not included in the word count . You can add quotes from the interview/dataset, but remember that any copy-pasted material should be strictly necessary to make your point – excessive data representation at the expense of putting down your own words and thoughts may result in a high similarity report and cost you points.

  • Write a report presenting your findings of the transcripts from the dataset Cycling

Please keep in mind that the course is about qualitative interviewing and data analysis. It is important that you demonstrate to us how you have engaged with the literature on qualitative methods, the actual processes of interviewing and data analysis as you have practiced it yourself, and if applicable, any other relevant literature that serves to illustrate your argument. Keep in mind that this is about methods , NOT content, however, you may want to consider literature that combines methodological discussion with wider social analysis (e.g. literature on feminist or postcolonial methodologies, interviewing in critical psychology or similar).

Use 2 transcripts from the qualitative dataset related to a public health topic provided in the course. We would like you to produce a report presenting your findings. It will not be possible to present all of your analysis in the report, so we suggest that you choose two key focused codes or higher level themes from your analysis to describe in detail and tell us why you have selected these to write about. This might include discussing which research question(s) you came to focus on.

Please situate the two focused codes/themes you have chosen within your wider analysis that you were developing (in relation to the other codes) by, for example, adding a diagram or table of your codes in your introduction.

The following is a suggested structure you might use - you can choose an alternative structure:

Introduction : A very brief description/background information on the topic area of the research and state the aims of the research questions for your analysis;

a. Brief description of the data set you are drawing on and the two key focused codes you will present in your report.

  • Why are they important

Methods: how you went about doing your analysis, including how you tried to ensure rigour, quality and credibility in your analysis. How did you practice reflexivity

Findings : description and illustration of your key findings in relation to your chosen

3a. How you developed your two initial and focused codes.

  • How did you identify them,
  • why are they important
  • Are there any public health implications that you can see from these
  • What else would you like to know if you were to be collecting more data

Limitations : (an honest) discussion of the quality of your analysis , with some consideration of issues relating to secondary analysis of qualitative data, and of the trustworthiness of what you claim in your findings. This may include some reflection on your experience of learning to analyse qualitative data and what you have learned for the future. what are the strengths or weaknesses of how you analyze the data

Discussion and conclusion : conclude your report by discussing the most important points from your findings and limitations and suggest what questions are left to explore if the analysis were developed further. You also want to consider making links with wider literature, either on qualitative methods, or from the topic area of the research.

Your report should be grounded in, and make reference to, methodological literature that you read during the course (please only cite attributable, published materials). You may also draw on wider research literature that is relevant to your findings.
