Assignment Task

This essay assignment involves doing some data analysis and presenting the results in the written report. You will analyze data using Stata. You will answer questions in text form and present analysis in tables and graphs. Follow the instructions below step by step. You will need two Stata files to complete the assignment, both are posted on Keats.

Part 1: Country background

1. Pick a country that’s available in the data

  • Hint: you can open the data file, use the code: tab isoname to see which countries are in the data set.

2. Provide some very brief background on the country:

  • What is the system of government? How often are elections? Is it high/medium/low income country?
  • You can use some figures from the WB data here to describe how the country compares to the rest of the world.
  • Be sure to use proper citations.

Part 2: Micro analysis

This part uses the data set WPID_micro.dta. You will analyse the relationship between voting behaviour and demographic variables. The dataset includes the most recently available data from each country.

  • Hint: To make things easier, you can delate observations from other countries. Use the code keep if isoname==”Algeria” . This will delete all observations from other countries.

1. Univariate analysis.

  • Choose a few variables for analysis (recommended 3-5). At least one should involve voting.
  • Describe them using both “plain English” and comment on the distribution statistical language, using graphs where appropriate (up to 3).
  • Describe the results very briefly in words

2. Bivariate analysis and hypothesis testing.

  • Next, analyse the relationships between the variables. Start with correlations. Think of some interesting hypotheses to test with these variables (use t-tests). Interpret and discuss the results and assumptions in text.
  • Report the results in neat tables – you should be able to include all t-test results in a single table.
  • You do not need to use up the word listing each number if it’s already in a table.

Part 3: Macro analysis:

  • Next use the file WPID_WB.dta.
  • Using voting behaviour from the WPID data and
  • WB indicators (variables that start with “wb”), examine 2 correlations. Include for each:
  • The correlation Coefficient
  • A scatter plot o Comment on the correlations. What do they tell you? What don’t they tell you? Are they likely causal? How is a cross-country analysis different than the micro-level analysis in Part 2?
