‘Race’ definitions and the World Order The Winant (2001) reading argues that a racial world order was founded on ideas about ‘race’. In groups, choose one of the following and prepare a 5-10 minute presentation for the class to explain how ideas about ‘race’ have been used to justify further episodes of discrimination.

• Jim Crow, the United States
•  Stolen Generations, Australia

Focus on:

• the relevant, dominant ideas about ‘race’
• how these ideas affected people’s thinking and behaviour, and
• the real-life consequences/inequalities for the groups of people involved.
